Volkswagen has teamed up with the German start-up Revoltech GmbH to create a 100% bio-based leather alternative, made from industrial hemp, for future car interiors. The innovative material, known as LOVR, could debut in Volkswagen models starting from 2028.
The LOVR material is crafted from industrial hemp residues, a byproduct of the regional hemp industry. It is fully recyclable or compostable, making it an environmentally friendly option for automotive interiors. This new surface material can be produced using existing industrial processes, ensuring scalability and ease of integration into large-scale manufacturing.
Volkswagen’s commitment to sustainability is evident in this partnership. Kai Grünitz, Volkswagen’s Board Member for Technical Development, emphasised the company’s focus on innovative and resource-efficient solutions. Andreas Walingen, Head of Strategy at Volkswagen, highlighted that this collaboration aligns with their ACCELERATE strategy, which prioritises the fusion of customer needs with sustainability goals.
Revoltech GmbH’s CEO, Lucas Fuhrmann, praised the project, noting that the LOVR material represents a significant advancement in automotive sustainability. The collaboration aims to leverage both companies’ strengths to rapidly bring this groundbreaking material to market.
The development of LOVR is part of Volkswagen’s broader effort to explore sustainable materials for vehicle interiors, with potential use expected from 2028. The material’s positive reception in initial customer feedback reflects its promise as a viable, eco-friendly alternative to traditional automotive surfaces.
