Vedanta to invest ₹1 lakh crore in Odisha for alumina refinery and aluminium plant

The announcement was made during a meeting between Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

Vedanta has announced a significant investment of ₹1 lakh crore in Odisha to establish a 6 million tonne per annum (MTPA) alumina refinery and a 3 MTPA green aluminium plant. This massive project is set to generate 2 lakh jobs and support Odisha’s target of becoming a USD 500 billion economy by 2030. The investment also includes plans for education and healthcare infrastructure.

The Anil Agarwal-led company has already invested ₹1 lakh crore in Odisha across various assets, and this new commitment further strengthens Vedanta’s presence in the state. The planned industrial complex will boost downstream industries, particularly in sectors such as automotive, power, construction, and railways, where aluminium plays a crucial role.

Commenting on the investment, Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal emphasised the importance of Odisha in the company’s growth and reaffirmed Vedanta’s commitment to driving industrialisation in the state. He highlighted that demand for aluminium, a key material for the future, is expected to double by 2030.

The alumina refinery and green aluminium plant will be located in Rayagada, a region that Vedanta envisions as developing into a major industrial hub, similar to Jharsuguda. The project will contribute to the state’s industrial growth and enhance India’s aluminium production capacity.

In addition to the industrial developments, Vedanta, in collaboration with the Odisha government, plans to open educational centres, hospitals, skill development facilities, and play schools to support the local community.

The announcement was made during a meeting between Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who is visiting Mumbai ahead of an investor summit in Odisha in January 2025.
