USD 30 million battery recycling venture launched by LOHUM, ReElement, and American Metals

The project aims to supply over 315,000 electric vehicles annually.

LOHUM Cleantech Ltd, ReElement Technologies, and American Metals have joined forces to establish a large-scale battery recycling and critical materials facility in the United States. The facility will have a capacity of 15.5 GWh and is being developed with an initial investment of USD 30 million.

The project aims to supply over 315,000 electric vehicles annually, addressing the growing demand for sustainable battery solutions. The plant, to be located at the Marion Advanced Technology Centre in Indiana, will generate 250 green jobs and is expected to expand to other locations in the future.

This facility will cover the entire lifecycle of battery management, from testing and repurposing for second-life applications to recycling and producing battery-grade materials. The materials produced will have a purity level of over 99.5%, supporting the domestic supply chain for lithium-based batteries in North America.

The collaboration will significantly reduce environmental impact, operating costs, and capital expenditure related to battery material purification. Rajat Verma, CEO of LOHUM, said the joint venture is vital for building resilient, circular supply chains in the US.

Mark Jensen, Chairman of American Metals and ReElement Technologies, emphasised the potential of leveraging their technologies to revolutionise battery recycling and refining with LOHUM’s approach.
