SSAB and Groupe Financière SNOP Dunois (Snop) have entered a strategic partnership for the supply of fossil-free steel for automotive components. This agreement aims to help Snop reduce the carbon footprint of its products and achieve a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030.

Snop, a leading Tier 1 supplier to European OEMs, manufactures body structure stampings, roll-formed parts, and assemblies for cars and commercial vehicles. With operations in 12 countries, the company employs over 8,200 people at 36 production facilities and four technical centres.

Pierre Mainguy, Purchasing Director at Snop, highlighted the importance of this collaboration, stating, “Reducing CO2 emissions is essential for our business and the planet. Partnering with SSAB positions us to achieve our goals for 2030 and beyond.”

SSAB is pioneering the transition to sustainable steelmaking by replacing traditional blast furnace methods with HYBRIT® technology. This process uses hydrogen-reduced sponge iron, eliminating carbon dioxide emissions and producing water as a by-product. SSAB’s fossil-free steel is expected to have a carbon footprint of less than 0.05 kg CO2e per kilogram of steel once production scales.

Huy Nguyen, Sales Director at SSAB Europe, emphasised the benefits for the automotive industry, saying, “Our fossil-free steel offers significant CO2 reductions while maintaining the high quality required for automotive components. This partnership is a step forward for greener cars and a more sustainable value chain.”

This collaboration builds on a long-standing relationship between the two companies, involving innovations across production, testing, and customer experiences. By advancing fossil-free steel production, SSAB aims to create a sustainable future for industries heavily reliant on steel.
