MAHLE has been awarded a contract by MAN Truck & Bus to supply critical components for the hydrogen engine in its “MAN hTGX” truck. The vehicle, which recently won the Truck Innovation Award 2025, is a zero-emission truck powered by a 6-cylinder hydrogen engine with a displacement of 16.8 litres and an output of 383 kW.

The hydrogen-powered engine will incorporate MAHLE’s advanced power cell unit, comprising pistons, piston rings, piston pins, and cylinder liners. Additional MAHLE components will also feature in the valve train system. MAN plans to produce around 200 units of the hydrogen truck for select markets by 2025, marking an important step toward decarbonising the commercial vehicle sector.

Dr. Roger Busch, MAHLE’s Head of Sales, highlighted the company’s extensive expertise in internal combustion engines, stating, “Our modern engine components make hydrogen-powered combustion engines a reality, meeting customer expectations for performance, efficiency, and durability.”

MAHLE’s hydrogen solutions have undergone extensive testing at the company’s hydrogen test centre in Stuttgart, demonstrating their readiness for large-scale production. Key advancements, such as reducing oil consumption and minimising blow-by—the leakage of hydrogen into the crankcase—ensure the engine’s reliability and efficiency.

Hydrogen, a renewable fuel with significant potential for transportation decarbonisation, remains a strategic focus for MAHLE. In addition to its work on hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines, MAHLE is advancing fuel cell technologies. Currently, the company is involved in nearly 30 hydrogen engine projects for both on- and off-highway applications.

The partnership with MAN Truck & Bus signals a growing market acceptance of hydrogen technology in commercial vehicles. With further series launches planned for 2025, MAHLE continues to strengthen its position as a key player in the transition to sustainable transportation.
