The TCI-IIMB Supply Chain Sustainability Lab (IIMB), in collaboration with Transport Corporation of India Ltd (TCI), has received an ISO 14083 certificate for its digital platform called Transportation Emissions Measurement Tool (TEMT). This platform quantifies and reports greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from freight transportation activities. It enables organisations to measure, manage, and reduce their emissions to meet regulatory requirements and sustainability goals.
The growing impact of freight emissions
The transportation sector contributes about 14 per cent of the country’s total GHG emissions, with freight transportation responsible for nearly 40 per cent of CO₂ emissions. Without cleaner technologies, transportation emissions could increase fourfold by 2050, reaching 1.17 billion tonnes of CO₂. Accurate measurement is essential for mitigating these emissions.
ISO 14083 is an international specification generalised to assess the emissions of GHG from transport activities including road, rail, air, marine and inland waterway. The ISO 14083 emission factors API has been incorporated into NICDC Logistics Data Services Limited’s (NLDSL’s) key product, the Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP). This integration enables users to calculate emissions from freight operations hence making logistics industry operations more transparent and sustainable.
Enabling industry-wide integration
TEMT is a one-stop site that facilities estimate emissions for all types of transport. It allows users to estimate emissions for current and planned shipments and compare emissions across modes for a specific origin-destination. It is not limited to any specific type of commodities, can be implemented for any kind of shipment and has PDF and CSV output options.
