Tata Steel expands Kalinganagar plant with Rs 27,000 crore investment

New facility will have benefits in some sectors like construction, lifting and excavation industries, and oil and gases.

Tata Steel has successfully commissioned India’s largest blast furnace in Kalinganagar, Odisha, for a total investment of Rs 27,000 crore. This will prepare Tata Steel to meet the growing demand of several industries such as shipbuilding, automotive, infrastructure, electricity, and defence due to the Phase II expansion that will increase the plant capacity from 3 MTPA to 8 MTPA. Also, the new facility will have benefits in some sectors like construction, lifting and excavation industries, and oil and gases.

Odisha has emerged as the largest investment destination for Tata Steel, with a total accumulated investment of over Rs 100,000 crore in the last 10 years. The launch of the largest blast furnace in India is a historic milestone for the steel sector and will enable the creation of new records in terms of capacity, efficiency, and environmental protection. The acquisition enhances Tata Steel’s claims to dominance of the premium value-added market segments with a demonstration of their engineering and technological expertise.

This new blast furnace has a volume of 5,870 m3 equipped with the latest technology, long campaign life and environmentally friendly features for steel production. It will utilise four best combustion stoves, two preheat stoves, a dry gas utilising plant, the largest Top Gas Recovery Turbine (TRT) , evaporative cooling system, zero discharge of process water plan, and rain water harvesting. The following facilities are proposed in Phase II expansion at Kalinganagar: The Pellet Plant; The Coke Plant; and The Cold Rolling Mill, all employing integrated technologies for a sustainable environment.
