SEMI, the global industry association that connects the semiconductor and electronics design and manufacturing value chain, has entered into a strategic partnership with the India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA), which is the leading industry association for electronics and semiconductor industries in India.
IESA will become a member of the global SEMI family and act as the SEMI affiliate in India, but will initially operate under its current identity with gradual introduction of SEMI processes and some of the selected projects. This comes at the backdrop of the commencement of; SEMICON India 2024 – the flagship event with specific focus on convening global leaders, semiconductor industry stakeholders and experts under the theme ‘Shaping the semiconductor future’.
This integration is expected to strengthen India’s plan to target the title of a “Semiconductor Powerhouse” by enhancing its design and manufacturing framework. Combined, the associations will strengthen the local manufacturing industry, promote the development of the country’s workforce, increase international competitiveness, and encourage technological independence. This move will mean that SEMI members will be able to directly access the rapidly rising Indian semiconductor market and a fresh revenue stream.
Speaking on the ongoing partnership, Dr. Veerappan, Chairperson of IESA, and Ashok Chandak, President of IESA, affirmed that this partnership will place India to transform as a global semiconductor hub, boost economic development as well as create innovation. This will help IESA contribute to policy advocacy for the electronics manufacturing space, agreeing to collaborate with both the Central and the State governments with SEMI to promote incentives for product development and manufacturing under the key programs such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) and Design Linked Incentive (DLI) model.
