Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) is preparing to launch operations at its much-anticipated battery Gigafactory in Jamnagar, Gujarat, by the second half of 2026. This significant project, spearheaded by RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani, is set to be a cornerstone in India’s transition towards green energy, focusing on battery manufacturing and energy storage solutions.
The Gigafactory will feature an annual capacity of 30 GWh, positioning it among the largest battery manufacturing facilities in India. Initially, the plant will concentrate on assembling Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) catering to utility-scale, residential, commercial, and mobility markets. As the facility evolves, it will expand into cell manufacturing and the production of battery chemicals, marking Reliance as a key player in advanced energy solutions.
Reliance’s entry into battery manufacturing is bolstered by the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for advanced chemistry cell battery production. The company has secured 5 GWh capacity under this scheme and is bidding for an additional 10 GWh. This strategic approach will enable Reliance to rapidly scale up production to meet both domestic and global demand.
In a forward-looking move, Reliance is also advancing sodium-ion battery technology, with plans to industrialise sodium-ion cell production at a megawatt level by next year. This initiative underlines the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in energy storage.
The Gigafactory will leverage expertise from subsidiaries Lithium Werks and Faradion to deliver next-generation batteries with a focus on safety, stability, and cost efficiency. By harnessing advanced electrochemical technologies, Reliance aims to produce batteries that cater to diverse energy storage needs, from stationary applications to electric mobility.
