NTPC has partnered with US-based Clean Core Thorium Energy (CCTE) to explore thorium-based nuclear fuel as a cleaner and more efficient energy solution. The collaboration aims to develop the Advanced Nuclear Energy for Enriched Life (ANEEL) fuel which is a blend of thorium and small amounts of enriched uranium. This fuel promises to improve nuclear energy production by utilising domestically available thorium.
Expanding into nuclear energy
As part of its strategy to diversify into nuclear energy, NTPC sees the partnership as a crucial step towards sustainable power generation. The move is aligned with the country’s focus on clean energy and energy security.
The ANEEL fuel is compatible with existing pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWR), making it a viable option for enhancing India’s energy mix. The partnership will also focus on indigenising fuel manufacturing, establishing local supply chains, and securing High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) supplies with a sovereign guarantee. However, the project’s success depends on obtaining approvals from both the Indian and US governments.
This partnership will establish thorium as a key component of India’s future energy security and represents a major advancement in nuclear energy in the nation.
