Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has inaugurated two new testing facilities in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, focusing on SUV safety and battery technology. The Mumbai-based automotive company unveiled a passive safety lab and a battery and cell research lab, representing an investment of over ₹300 crore, aimed at enhancing SUV safety standards and advancing battery cell technology research.
The passive safety lab enables Mahindra’s engineering teams to perform critical safety tests across various load scenarios, ensuring robust safety standards for its SUVs. Additionally, the battery and cell research lab will support M&M’s development of innovative cell technologies, a crucial component in the evolving electric vehicle landscape. Located 55 kilometres from Mahindra’s Mahindra Research Valley (MRV), these facilities are designed to work alongside the Mahindra SUV Proving Track (MSPT), where vehicles undergo testing on a range of terrains and conditions.
Velusamy R., M&M President of Automotive Technology & Product Development, emphasised the company’s commitment to safety and sustainability, highlighting that these state-of-the-art facilities empower engineers to create SUVs that align with Mahindra’s high safety standards.
The new labs are expected to accelerate the development process for Mahindra’s SUVs, allowing for advanced research and testing closer to the MRV, where all Mahindra SUVs are engineered from the ground up. This investment reinforces Mahindra’s position in the automotive sector, focusing on safety, innovation, and sustainable technology as it works to meet both national and global standards.
The new facilities are part of Mahindra’s strategy to remain at the forefront of automotive safety and sustainable innovation, supporting the company’s goal of delivering safer, high-performance vehicles to the Indian market.
