Jindal Stainless powers India’s first Vande metro with high-strength steel

Rail modernisation aligns with Indian Railways’ eco-friendly shift, promoting sustainability in infrastructure.

Jindal Stainless supplies 201LN grade for the first time to India’s inaugural Vande Metro train, crafted by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. This innovative move aims to make the coaches lighter, more energy-efficient, and more cost-effective, ushering in a new era of inter-city travel. By reducing the thickness of external panels from 3mm to 2mm compared to conventional ferritic stainless steel, the train becomes lighter and more fuel-efficient. The 201LN stainless steel grade offers superior corrosion resistance, strength, durability, and crash-resistant properties, ensuring top-notch passenger safety.

Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless, expressed pride in contributing to India’s railway modernization. This initiative aligns with Indian Railways’ migration to 201LN stainless steel, fostering sustainability and reducing carbon footprints. Set to launch in July, the Vande Metro targets urban commuters across distances of up to 250 km, connecting over 120 cities nationwide. Initial routes include Chennai-Tirupati, Bhubaneswar-Balasore, Agra-Mathura, Delhi-Rewari, and Lucknow-Kanpur.
