Innovative uses of discarded wind turbines uncovered

It encourages rethinking waste management to foster sustainability and resilience in facing future challenges.

Pradip Chopra, Chairman of iLEAD and PS Group, a first-generation entrepreneur, educationist, philanthropist, and author, recently underlined the importance of sustainability. He explained how wind turbine blades are being used in embankments, turning waste into valuable resources for a better future.

Windmills are very important for moving the world towards a future with clean energy. They get power from the wind, which helps the fight against climate change. When it comes to making wind energy, India is now one of the biggest contributors in the world. Thousands of turbines help the country get a lot of the clean energy it needs.

But when turbine blades hit the end of their useful life, recycling them can be hard, especially when the materials are fibreglass. The iLEAD Institute Kolkata’s garbage collection programme, called “Waste to Wealth,” has found creative ways to use these blades to make weak structures stronger, like those in flood-prone areas of Murshidabad or the Sunderbans.

Fibreglass, which is used in the blades, is one of the most sturdy and least likely to rust materials. They can provide very strong flood barriers that are both cost-effective and good for the environment. This plan cuts down on trash and the carbon emissions that come with making new materials.

The project recently applied for a patent, which shows how waste can be turned into useful things and how important it is to promote new ideas in environmentally friendly ways of doing things.

By doing these things, one can rethink how to get rid of or reuse things in a way that promotes sustainability and builds long-lasting settings that can handle future problems.
