Finnish phone manufacturer HMD Global, now with the Nokia brand, is set to establish India as a pivotal manufacturing base for its phone exports. Initially focusing on feature phones, the company is expanding its product line to include smartphones, recently unveiling new models under the HMD brand globally, with availability in India.
This move marks a resurgence for the Nokia brand, once produced in its own Tamil Nadu plant until its closure in 2014. Despite a late start in exports, HMD Global quickly reached a milestone of six million phones within six months, primarily comprising feature phones. With plans for further expansion and diversification, India’s role in HMD’s global manufacturing strategy is set to grow significantly.
