Government OKs major NPCIL-NTPC joint venture for Rajasthan’s nuclear future

ASHVINI, an NPCIL subsidiary, will lead efforts to expand India’s nuclear capacity for 2070 Net Zero goals.

The government has approved a joint venture between NPCIL and NTPC. It is made to construct four 700 MWe nuclear power plants at Mahi Banswara, Rajasthan.

The new entity, Anushakti Vidyut Nigam Ltd (ASHVINI), will be a subsidiary of NPCIL, holding a 51 per cent stake. The Department of Atomic Energy handed over the approval documents to top officials from both NPCIL and NTPC.

Moreover, they are authorising ASHVINI to build, own, and operate nuclear plants in India under the current legal framework. This project involves 4×700 MW Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR). It aims to expand India’s nuclear power capacity and support its long-term Net Zero goals for 2070.
