Google is accelerating its investment in India’s digital infrastructure with plans to expand its data centre operations. The tech giant is reportedly close to acquiring a 22.5-acre plot in Navi Mumbai to develop its first self-built data centre in the country. This expansion comes as Google strengthens its commitment to supporting the rapid adoption of AI and cloud technologies in India.

Bikram Singh Bedi, Vice President of Google Cloud India, highlighted the country’s growing importance in the global cloud market. As more Indian businesses embrace Google’s AI and cloud solutions, the demand for robust infrastructure continues to surge.

The proposed data centre in Navi Mumbai will significantly boost Google’s capacity in India, providing advanced cloud services and AI capabilities, including the Gemini 1.5 Flash AI model. This localised approach allows businesses to store data and process machine learning securely within India, aligning with the country’s digital sovereignty goals.

In addition to the Navi Mumbai facility, Google is expanding its existing centres in Mumbai and Delhi to meet rising demand. The move reinforces India’s role as a key market for Google’s AI and cloud growth strategy.

This expansion is part of a broader effort to strengthen India’s AI and cloud ecosystem, with collaborations like Google’s partnership with the EkStep Foundation to export India’s Digital Public Infrastructure globally.

The Navi Mumbai centre, once completed, will be a pivotal asset in Google’s long-term strategy to support India’s digital economy and energy transition.
