A non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in Mumbai by Coal India (CIL) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL). The agreement focuses on evaluating the establishment of a coal-to-synthetic natural gas (SNG) project at Western Coalfields (WCL) using surface coal gasification.

The process of surface coal gasification involves conversion of coal into synthetic natural gas, which is a purer energy than the conventional coal power. It is equally aligned with India’s focus on controlling carbon emission, as well as looking for other viable energy yield sources. By creatively utilising coal resources, BPCL and CIL, two Maharatna public sector enterprises (PSUs), will advance greener energy solutions under the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding.
