Axis Communications has released its ninth-generation system-on-chip (SoC), ARTPEC-9, designed to address key challenges in security surveillance systems. The SoC also provides improved AI analysis tools, improved image quality, and higher cybersecurity as well as cutting storage costs which are provided due to the implementation of the AV1 video encoding standard.
ARTPEC-9 enhances AI analytics in areas of sharper accuracy and improved recognition of objects as small as vehicles, enabling the prevention of accidents and optimisation of operational flow in industries such as security, sales, and logistics. It also cuts down on bandwidth and storage, yet allows more detailed video management than it would otherwise be possible.
According to Johan Paulsson, Chief Technology Officer at Axis Communications, with ARTPEC-9, they are focused on making network video more adaptable to the diverse needs of customers, while improving efficiency and security. By designing their SoC in-house, they maintain full control over the production process, ensuring the quality and cybersecurity standards customers rely on.
ArtPEC-9 builds on Axis’ existing imaging technologies like Axis Lightfinder 2.0 and Axis Forensic WDR, enabling clear, detailed images regardless of the environment. It also stabilises security with attributes such as secure boot and signed OS so each device can stay immune from cyber threats.
It improves the AI analytics’ chip which means better sense and identification of objects in further range and quicker time period. This improvement in the detection accuracy can also mean that alerts are given earlier allowing the security teams to handle them before they get out of hand. The possibility to identify a greater amount and number of objects and find differences between them guarantees more accurate and conclusive categorisations which are important for safety and security.
ARTPEC-9’s introduction of the AV1 video encoding standard helps reduce bandwidth and storage requirements, a critical factor in large-scale surveillance operations. It is currently supported by AXIS Camera Station, and major video management solutions providers like Genetec and Milestone will add support for AV1. Axis will begin including the ARTPEC-9 SoC in select network video products beginning early 2025.
