Air India’s global expansion includes major maintenance facility in Bengaluru

Air India is gearing up for a significant global expansion under its Vihaan.AI transformation initiative, aiming to cement its position as a premier international carrier. CEO Campbell Wilson announced plans to increase the airline’s fleet by over 100 aircraft, complementing the 470 ordered in 2023.

The airline’s expansion strategy includes modernising its fleet to enhance both domestic and international operations. Supporting this vision is a comprehensive infrastructure plan, featuring a 12-bay maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility in Bengaluru. Additionally, a flight training academy with a capacity of 34 aircraft in Amravati and a training institute in Gurugram are set to bolster India’s aviation training ecosystem.

Wilson highlighted that these developments align with Air India’s commitment to elevating India’s aviation sector on the global stage. As part of its five-year Vihaan.AI initiative, the airline aims to re-establish itself as a top-tier global carrier, blending operational excellence with advanced training facilities.

January 2025 marks three years since Air India became part of the Tata Group, during which it has made strides towards its ambitious transformation. The airline’s vision is to support India’s growing aviation demand while playing a critical role in the industry’s development.

These moves not only reflect Air India’s growth aspirations but also its focus on nurturing talent and strengthening infrastructure for the long-term benefit of the country’s aviation ecosystem. The fleet expansion, paired with state-of-the-art training and maintenance facilities, signals a new era for Air India and the broader industry.

As Air India continues its journey under Tata Group stewardship, the Vihaan.AI program remains central to its mission of becoming a globally recognised leader in aviation.
