ABB and Titagarh’s strategic collaboration for Indian metro projects

Empowering ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat,’ the strategic partnership secures orders for efficient metro coaches in Gujarat.

ABB and Titagarh Rail Systems have formed a strategic partnership to supply propulsion systems for metro rolling stock projects in India. This aligns with the “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives, securing early success with orders for metro coaches in Gujarat.

Titagarh specialises in designing, manufacturing, and servicing passenger rolling stock and metro coaches. ABB, a global leader in propulsion systems, joins forces with Titagarh to establish a strong presence in the Indian market and expand globally.

The partnership includes Titagarh purchasing ABB propulsion systems and securing manufacturing rights for traction motors. Edgar Keller, President of ABB’s Traction Business, notes that this collaboration supports sustainable rail transportation in India through energy-efficient technology produced locally.

Umesh Chowdhary, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Titagarh, emphasises the importance of this partnership in aligning with the government’s self-reliance and manufacturing initiatives. The agreement includes developing in-house capabilities for Train Control and Management Systems (TCMS), supporting the vision of “Aatmanirbharta.”

The strategic partnership is already in action with orders for propulsion equipment and TCMS for metro coaches in Gujarat, showcasing the collaboration’s immediate impact.
