ABB and ArcelorMittal partner to slash carbon footprint with XCarb® steel in power systems

The team behind Kabeldon has reduced the production carbon footprint by 29 per cent.

ABB and ArcelorMittal are collaborating to integrate XCarb® steel, which is created with high quantities of recycled steel and 100 per cent renewable energy into its dependable Kabeldon power distribution system. Owing to this sustainable procurement agreement, the electrical equipment has a 29 per cent lower carbon footprint. According to Massimiliano Cifalitti, president of ABB Smart Power, the company’s employees are enthusiastic about implementing circular business models that extend the lifespan of materials and products and working with suppliers to bring more environmentally friendly options.

The team behind Kabeldon has reduced the production carbon footprint by 29 per cent, or 60 kg CO2e, by using XCarb® steel. ABB’s sustainable sourcing strategy places significant emphasis on low carbon-emission steel, which will be the main focus of the ABB Smart Power division’s portfolio for the next two years. ABB has committed to using ABB’s Circularity Approach on 80 per cent of its products and solutions by 2030.

Originally intended for outdoor usage, Kabeldon offers weather-resistant, dependable, and safe power distribution. It is currently extensively utilised in renewable energy and electric car charging infrastructure. A third-party has validated the Type III Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for the Kabeldon cabinet, and the cabinet with XCarb® is about to acquire its own EPD.

An electric arc furnace running entirely on renewable energy is used to create ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® recycled and renewable steel, which is composed of at least 75 per cent recycled steel. The final product emits up to 70 per cent less CO2e than steel in the old-fashioned way. The effective integration of XCarb® immediately supports ABB’s objective to satisfy the circularity standards of the organisation by 2030 in 80 per cent of its systems and products.
