We adopt “Respectful Workplace Policy”: Mohini Kelkar, Grind Master Machines
For the occasion of International Women’s Day, Manufacturing Today speaks to Mohini Kelkar, Director (Business Development), Grind Master Machines and woman entrepreneur, who shares her experiences.
My father is an Engineer and was passionate about the hard core engineering work, which he did in his career. I was inspired by him.
After my first year of Engineering, there was a choice to take up different branches and mostly girls opted Electronics or Electrical. I was more interested in manufacturing technology and innovations. Therefore, I opted for Production Engg. Incidentally, I was the first lady Production Engineer from VJTI and probably from India. Fortunately I had an extremely supportive family and particularly in-laws. It is indeed important to have family support to be successful. Also, a woman has to learn to prioritise the work at home and the office and learn to not to feel bad about missing on few things.
Together with my husband Milind (who is also Production Engineer from VJTI), I started a small unit in a garage in Aurangabad in 1984. Hitherto, all metal finishing operations were performed manually, with limitations on productivity and consistency of finish and resulted in an unhealthy work environment. Grind Master was born with an urge to bridge this gap with innovative engineering solutions.
We first built cookware buffing machines for Nirlep. Subsequently, we went on developing various kinds of machines. In year 2000, Microfinishing technology caught our attention and we started developing Microfinishing machines. In order to offer the latest technology and complete solutions to the customers, we cooperated with various Companies worldwide.
Grind Master is recognised as a Global Player in Nano finishing, Metal finishing and deburring. With over 5000 machines across 6 continents, serving a wide range of industries, we bring a world of experience in machine technology and process knowledge
Work culture at Grind Master
Grind Master adopts “Respectful Workplace Policy” in an effort to create a culture of respect and to ensure compliance with the Sexual Harassment of Women at the Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 (SHWWA, 2013). The company extends its provisions to all employees and encompasses other forms of harassment as well
I think the change in the mindset of people is a must. Our society is still male dominated and gender bias is inherent. Therefore, a big social change is needed. It is important to make women economically independent and therefore creating more jobs for women is very important.
